In the interest of being greener (and hopefully saving a little money), I decided to put up some insulating window film this winter. Casa MFA is old and kind of drafty, and Hotter's and my bedroom in particular gets COLD, especially if we sleep with the door shut, which we do most nights so that a) Isis doesn't get down from the bed and go wandering and b) we can sleep naked if we so choose without scarring the kids for life. So I researched it and the general consensus per the innernet was that this product was by far superior in both performance and ease of installation:
Figure One: Yep, it's an affiliate link.
So I ordered myself some kits (although I actually didn't order mine from Amazon; I am too cheap to join Amazon Prime and didn't need enough kits to qualify for free Super Saver shipping so instead I got mine from Drugstore.com) (they have 'em on sale currently and right now you can get 12% cashback through eBates as well--WIN!) and a couple of days ago I installed them with help from Hotter and Big Child.
The installation was a breeze, which is really saying something when you consider that I was mixing mySELF, heights, double-sided tape, and the assistance of my husband and oldest child. You don't have to get the film perfectly taut before adhering it to the tape; it shrinks up nicely when you heat it with the hairdryer. WHOO TITS!
As far as the performance of the product goes, Hotter and I got a night of very poor sleep the first night after we installed the things, because WE WERE HOT (I did the windows in our bedroom first but didn't want to lower the thermostat until we did the boys' rooms). Once we adjusted the thermostat (we ended up lowering it by three whole degrees after everyone's windows were done) all was roses, and I can't wait to see how this affects our power bill!
So yeah, 3M gets two thumbs way up in my unsponsored, uncompensated review that they totally didn't endorse in any way, shape or form, and all of y'all should give this a try (preferably either through that affiliate link up there or by signing up for eBates through my referral link and buying them from Drugstore, heh).
